Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH)

Nancy Kass, Sc.D is Phoebe R. Berman Professor of Bioethics and Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Berman Bioethics Institute.  She also is a Faculty Affiliate of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Georgetown University, and a Fellow of the Hastings Center.  Dr. Kass conducts research in bioethics and public health policy, including in U.S. and international research ethics, public health ethics, HIV/AIDS policy, and genetics policy.  Research projects have included an NIH grant to improve informed consent in cancer trials; an award from the National Bioethics Advisory Commission to study ethics issues facing US researchers who work in developing countries; a project documenting attitudes and experiences of healthy volunteers who join Phase 1 studies providing payment; and an NIH-funded project interviewing research participants in developing countries.  Dr. Kass is Principal Investigator of the Environmental Justice Partnership, funded by the NIH, which brings together experts from the JHSPH, Maryland Institute College of Art and East Baltimore Community to “bridge the disconnect” between Johns Hopkins researchers and the East Baltimore community.  Dr. Kass has been a member and vice-chair of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health’s IRB, a  member of the National Cancer Institute central IRB, and was co-chair of the National Cancer Institute’s Working Group on Informed Consent.  She has served on advisory committees for the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Institutes of Health.  Dr. Kass teaches the JHSPH course on Research Ethics and Integrity: US and International Issues and has taught numerous short workshops on international research ethics, both domestically and abroad.  She is director of the School’s PhD program in bioethics and health policy and directs the Johns Hopkins-Fogarty Bioethics Training Program for African professionals.
