Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH)
Hampton House, Room 324 I joined the EJP to connect to the local community organizations and leaders. I was not particularly interested in environmental health when I joined the EJP but was interested in the being a part of the original research project to find out from community members how to improve the research process. There is so much research conducted in East Baltimore that research itself is like an environmental issue because it’s so common. I also felt that if I was going to be a student at Hopkins I didn’t want to repeat the same mistakes that others have made. Being trained in health education, I am very aware of the need to share information, but I was aware that the direction of information needed to go from community stakeholders to researchers. In the same way I also think it’s very important that when information is conveyed to community stakeholders it needs to be in a useable way. And lastly I think it’s an ethical responsibility for researchers to engage and partner with community stakeholders and to report results back to community as much as possible. Joining the EJP has allowed me to be a part of “breaking the disconnect!”
